The baseline for our billing is $80.00 per hour. This is only for time actually spent on developing the database, as outlined in a statement of work. There is no charge for discussing a database you may have in mind, but there will be a consultation fee for the sit-down meeting to diagram out your needs. This will be noted in the proposal.
We will quote a fixed price, based on the estimated number of hours to complete the project. Obviously, the complexity of the project has a direct impact on this. New databases can generally be completed in 20 to 60 programming hours. It could take less time for a relatively simple project.
You describe what you'd like the program to do, including any reports you'd like to generate. Reports can be custom designed, or can be designed as a replication of an existing report or form you already use. Based on this, we can get a pretty good idea of the tables and queries you'll need, user input forms, reports, etc.
We will provide you with a Statement of Work, detailing what will be done with an estimate of how many hours it will take to complete design of the various elements of the database you need. This will also include time needed to populate the database with test data, and do any necessary debugging. If you agree, we'll start work. When the design is complete, we'll provide you with a copy of the database along with an Invoice. On receipt of payment, the database is yours to do with as you will, including modifying the database.
If there is any problem with functionality, as described in the Statement of Work, we will correct it at no additional charge. This does not cover modifications you make once you receive the database! Adding functionality - that is, making the database do more than was described in the initial Statement of Work - will be a new project with a new Statement of Work. ‘Scope creep’ is the bane of all projects.
Modification of an existing database is usually comparable to building a new one.
Maintenance of a database we did not build will probably require modification of that database, however minor. We can not in good conscience take on maintenance of such a database ‘as is’.
That said, Database Your Way has two forms of maintenance agreement, either of which is entirely optional on your part.
